Ms. Barbara Sabol
The NAFEO Nation HBCU and PBI Advocate!

We shine the spotlight on Nurse Barbara Sabol, lovingly known as “Grand Barb,” during this May 2021 National Nurses Month. Nurse Sabol is an accomplished health program officer and administrator, children and families champion, diversity and inclusion proponent and philanthropist who has helped keep open the doors of more than a few HBCUs. You can help further her cause by contributing to her current project the Homework USA Community that assists youth aging out of foster care.

A Career of Health Service. Nurse Barbara Sabol was a program director in health at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation for 13 years, where she designed initiatives to improve the health of the most vulnerable populations across America. Before joining the Foundation, Sabol was President and CEO of NorthStar Group in Washington, DC. She also served as Commissioner for New York City’s Human Resources Administration. Nurse Sabol holds a master’s degree in counseling and guidance and an undergraduate degree in psychology, both from the University of Missouri at Kansas City.

A Champion for HBCUs and Minority Healthcare Education. Sabol established and maintained The Barbara J. Sabol Endowment at NAFEO that assisted many HBCUs in realizing their missions throughout prospering and challenging times for more than two decades. She designed the Health Professions Pipeline Internship Program (HPPIP) for HBCUs that have a medical school, nursing school, or a school of allied health. She also designed an initiative to encourage minority oral health professionals to go into teaching professions. In addition, she supported a six-year initiative by NAFEO, HACU, AIHEC, and APIACU that was responsible for preparing more than 40 HBCU and MSI presidents and chancellors.

Pioneer for the Homework USA Community - You Can Help! Sabol has begun the Homework USA Community. a bold, innovative model community for children aging out of foster care. The immediate goal is to pilot and refine the model locally to allow others to replicate it. The model features safe and stable affordable housing, an intentional and inclusive community and sustainable living. The Community has raised $1.4 million to date and needs an additional $500,000.
